Located at the top of the rack arm, the spool serves as the contact point between the rack and your bike’s tire. Replace worn or damaged spools to maintain proper tire contact and secure bike transport.
I use 2 bikes. One has a fender, the other doesn't. So I was constantly having to move the spool up or down to hold the tire best and to prevent damage on the fender. I also bike with others who may or may not have a fender. This tool has simplified the process of putting the bikes on my 1Up rack regardless of fender use. It doesn't hurt that it is attractive but I typically keep it on the car side to not attract unwanted attention. The bike locks should be used with these.
