The Cape Cod Rail Trail is the crown jewel of Massachusetts cycling. This 25.5-mile paved rail trail runs from South Yarmouth to Wellfleet, passing through seven towns along a former railroad corridor.

What Makes It Great

The trail rolls through some of the most iconic Cape Cod scenery you can find. The surface is smooth asphalt with a mostly flat grade, making it a fantastic choice for families and road bikes alike.

• Old Colony Rail Trail spur adding 4 more miles down to Chatham

• Part of the developing East Coast Greenway

Tips for Riding

Free parking is available at multiple trailheads, including Station Avenue in South Yarmouth and LeCount Hollow Road in Wellfleet. Start early on summer weekends to beat the crowds.

For something completely different, head to the tip of Cape Cod. The Province Lands Trail in Provincetown is a 5.5-mile loop through rolling sand dunes, pine forests, and cranberry bogs inside Cape Cod National Seashore.

What to Expect

This isn't your typical flat Cape Cod bike ride. The trail has steep hills, sharp curves, and real elevation change. The hilly terrain is a workout, but the ocean views are worth every climb.

• Spurs extend to Race Point Beach and Herring Cove Beach, adding about 2 miles

• The parking lot at the Province Lands Visitor Center is the best starting point

• Pick up a trail map at the trailhead before starting out

The Minuteman Bikeway is one of the most popular rail trails in the United States. This 10-mile paved path runs from Bedford through Lexington and Arlington to the Alewife MBTA station in Cambridge, roughly tracing the route Paul Revere rode in 1775.

Route Overview

The trail connects directly to public transportation at its southern end, making it one of the few bike trails in the state where you can hop on the subway to start your ride. The path is 12 feet wide, paved, and flat.

Along the way, you'll pass through:

• Historic Lexington Center and the Battle Green

• Spy Pond in Arlington

• Quiet residential neighborhoods with mature tree cover

• Bedford Depot Park, with a restored passenger rail car

Good to Know

At its northern end, the trail connects to the Reformatory Branch Trail toward Concord. Restaurants, coffee shops, and bike shops sit close to the path in Arlington Center and Lexington Center.

Heads up: This is one of the busiest Boston trail corridors during commute hours and weekend afternoons. Where the path meets road crossings, follow the signed bike lane detours carefully.

The Charles River Bike Path is a roughly 14-mile multi-use trail loop following both banks of the Charles River from the Museum of Science in Boston to Watertown Square.

Why Ride It

• Views of the Boston skyline and the iconic Esplanade

• Harvard University and Cambridge waterfront

• Multiple bridges for crossing between the Boston and Cambridge sides

• Mostly flat paved path, suitable for all skill levels

Some sections get congested near the Esplanade and Harvard Square. Multiple crossing points let you customize your route length. A trail map for the full mile loop is available at several kiosks along the route.

Southwest Corridor Park is a 4.1-mile linear park and bike path running from Back Bay to Jamaica Plain along Washington Street. The paved trail connects the Back Bay T station to the Forest Hills T station, with access to public transportation at both ends. It's a quick, flat ride through some of Boston's most vibrant neighborhoods.

Over in the Berkshires, the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail (pronounced "ash-oo-will-ti-cook") offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. This roughly 14-mile paved trail runs through the Hoosac River Valley between Pittsfield and Adams.

Trail Character

The name comes from a Native American word meaning "the pleasant river in between the hills." The natural beauty lives up to the name, with views of Cheshire Reservoir and Mount Greylock lining the route.

• Wildlife sightings are common: herons, turtles, beavers near the wetland sections

• The Cheshire Reservoir stretch is particularly scenic on calm days

• Multiple parking lots and restrooms spaced along the trail

• The town of Adams at the northern end has restaurants right off the path

More Trails Worth Riding

Massachusetts has dozens of additional trails worth a visit:

• Mass Central Rail Trail: An ambitious 104-mile trail project connecting Boston to Northampton along the Connecticut River valley. Several sections are already open, with trail map resources available through MassDOT.

• Cape Cod Canal Bikeway: Service roads on both sides of the canal offer about 7 miles each of flat, paved riding with views of Buzzards Bay. Connect down to Woods Hole from here for a ride to the Martha's Vineyard ferry terminal, or explore the quiet Woods Hole village on foot.

• Assabet River Rail Trail: A 12.5-mile paved path through Marlborough, Hudson, Stow, and Maynard.

• Manhan Rail Trail: A 4.5-mile trail in Easthampton with Connecticut River views and easy access from downtown.

• Methuen Rail Trail: A developing rail trail in the Merrimack Valley, adding off-road trail options north of Boston.

Mountain Biking in Massachusetts

Massachusetts has a strong mountain bike community, with off-road trail networks maintained largely by the New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA). Check NEMBA's site for an off-road trail map covering each region.

Top Spots for Mountain Biking

Best Seasons to Ride

Spring and fall offer the best conditions. Summer works but can bring humidity, especially in the Boston area. Cape Cod stays cooler thanks to ocean breezes. Fall foliage season is spectacular on the Berkshire trails.

Getting Around

The MBTA allows bikes on trains outside of rush hour, so you can access Boston trail favorites like the Minuteman Bikeway and Southwest Corridor Park without needing a car. For trails further out, most trailheads have free parking lots.

Trail Etiquette

• Call out or ring a bell when passing

• Yield to pedestrians and horses

• Stay to the right except when passing

• Keep dogs leashed on multi-use paths

• Pack out what you pack in
